Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed July as "California Wild King Salmon Month" according to Jim Anderson, Chairman of the California Salmon Council.

July also marked the reopening of much of California's coastline to commercial fishing. Although the fishery was never fully shut down, much of the prime fishing areas in June were temporarily closed to protect constrained Klamath stocks. Much of the fleet took the month off to pursue other fisheries such as Albacore or Dungeness Crab.

Governor Schwarzenegger Proclaims California Salmon Month
SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed July as "California Wild King Salmon Month" according to Jim Anderson, Chairman of the California Salmon Council.

According to Schwarzenegger's proclamation, "the California Wild King Salmon industry contributes to the variety and diversity of natural foods available to consumers in our Golden State. Wild King Salmon is a nutritious and wholesome fish, rich in heart-protecting omega-3 fatty acids."

"California is the leading producer of troll-caught (hook-and-line) wild king salmon along the Pacific Coast," said Jim Anderson. Commercial salmon fishermen caught 6.2 million pounds of wild California King Salmon(R), last year, a slight decrease from the 2003 catch of 6.4 million pounds. Anderson adds, "It's interesting to note that more fish were actually caught last year than the previous year, but the average size was smaller," which explains the decreased number of pounds landed.

The Pacific Fisheries Management Council, a regulatory body that manages the Pacific fishing season, predicts the commercial salmon troll industry will return to a more traditional season where fisherman are projected to land 5 million pounds of California King salmon this year. California fishermen abide by regulations designed to ensure there will be a sustainable supply of these fish now, and in the future.

"During July, we celebrate California Wild King Salmon Month to raise awareness about this locally caught fish. It is also a time to consider the valuable role of the salmon industry in fortifying the health and economic prosperity of California," Schwarzenegger said.

Anderson wants consumers to know that not all salmon are alike. "Salmon species vary on where they're caught, and whether they're from the ocean or farm-raised," he says. "California salmon, or Chinooks, are called 'kings' because they are regarded as the most prized, as well as the largest, of the five species of Pacific salmon." The other four salmon species are Chum, Coho, Pink and Sockeye.

Anderson added, "Consumers should ask for California King Salmon, which is fresher, because they are caught locally off California's coastline. King salmon have a higher oil content that adds to their natural robust flavor and deep coloring, a favorite among professional chefs."

The California Salmon Council has also developed a new recipe brochure that provides information on how to fillet, store, and cook a whole salmon. For a free copy of "Whole California King Salmon, It's the Catch of the Day," send a self-addressed stamped business-size envelope to California Salmon Council, P.O. Box 2255, Folsom, CA 95763-2255.
