The National Restaurant Association has announced that more than 8,000 restaurants nationwide have signed on to participate in Dine for America, a nationwide, industry-wide event to raise funds to be donated to the American Red Cross for hurricane disaster relief. The number of participating restaurants for the October 5th fundraising event has exceeded the total participation level of the first Dine for America benefit in 2001, and the Association reports that hundreds of more companies are continuing to register daily at the Dine for America Web site at  www.dineforamerica.org.

Over 13,000 Restaurants Participate in Dine for America Event
(Washington, DC) The National Restaurant Association today announced that 13,000 restaurants nationwide have signed on to participate in Dine for America, a nationwide, industry-wide event on October 5 to raise funds to be donated to the American Red Cross for hurricane disaster relief. As a unique way to promote the event, the Association has coordinated efforts with the e-mail invitation service Evite, providing an easy way for consumers to invite family and friends to join in the effort on www.dineforamerica.org.

"Restaurants are often among the first to serve those in need, and never has it been more evident than in the wake of the Gulf Coast hurricanes," said Steven C. Anderson, president and chief executive officer of the National Restaurant Association. "The overwhelming response from restaurants nationwide underscores their dedication to this worthy cause, and on October 5, Americans have the opportunity to show the same dedication simply by dining at one of their favorite restaurants. Using the Evite service makes it convenient to send an invitation to family and friends to share in an evening of great food and great company for a great cause. The more who join us at the table, the more meaningful the impact."

Evite is a free social-planning Web site featuring invitations, social networking, local information and event listings. From planning a dinner party for friends to finding something to do on Saturday night, Evite makes it easy to explore local areas, communicate, coordinate, and make decisions. The Evite electronic invitation to Dine for America on October 5 is available on www.evite.com today.

Dine for America was created after September 11, 2001, when the restaurant industry came together to raise funds for disaster relief efforts following that national tragedy. In 2001, 8,000 restaurants participated and collectively raised nearly $20 million for the victims of September 11, and their families. With the upcoming October 5th Dine for America event, the industry has swiftly responded in an overwhelming, united effort to help fellow Americans who have been impacted by the recent devastation of hurricane activity in the Gulf Coast region. Restaurant companies continue to register daily at the Dine for America Web site at www.dineforamerica.org, where all participating restaurants are listed.

The Association said it is not too late for restaurants not yet registered to participate. Interested restaurant owners and operators are encouraged to get involved by hosting a Dine for America event and donating all or a portion of the day's sales/profits. Restaurant employees can participate by volunteering to work on October 5, or donating a portion of their tips.
