Annual Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition Set for April
SEATTLE: With oysters on the half shell one of the fastest growing restaurant trends, "oyster wines" has become an important niche wine category. It’s dry, crisp, clean-finishing white wines that are the most likely oyster pairings.
The twelfth annual 2006 Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition, billed as a “dating service for oysters and West Coast wines,” is open to wineries from British Columbia, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
The competition, sponsored by Taylor Shellfish Farms of Shelton, Washington and organized by Jon Rowley of Jon Rowley & Associates, Seattle, will select 10 equal winners for the "Oyster Award". Judges include oyster-loving food and wine writers, restaurateurs and retailers. The idea is to identify
the ten best West Coast wines to go with West Coast oysters.
Wines are judged blind, each with a Kumamoto oyster. Preliminary judging will take place at Anthony's Homeport at Shilshole Bay in Seattle April 4-10, when five veteran judges will select 20 wines for the finals. These final judgings will be done by a panel of 12 judges at each of three venues; the Water Grill in Los Angeles (April 25), One Market Restaurant in San Francisco (April 26) and Anthony's HomePort on Shilshole Bay in Seattle. Scores in the three cities are combined to select the ten 2006 "Oyster Award" winners, which will be announced April 28.
Competition organizer John Rowley reports that "Oyster Award" winning wineries enjoy immediate sales results and can quickly sell out of their winning vintage. Restaurant response is rewarding with interest in using "Oyster Award" wines on wine lists, regular by-the-glass programs and special features. Deadline for entries is March 31.
