Highland Park, the producer of fine Scotch, has presented Cask No.443, selected by and bottled exclusively for Whisky Magazine & Park Avenue Liquor Shop, for debut at Whisky Live in New York City New York (April 5, 2006). Declared "The Best Spirit in the World," #1 by authority F. Paul Pacult, Highland Park, along with Whisky Magazine and Park Avenue Liquor Shop, have introduced an exclusive single cask bottling at Whisky Live in New York City.

A 23-year-old whisky, Highland Park Single Cask No. 443 was selected from the distillery's reserved collection of single casks by Whisky Magazine Founder and Publisher, Damian Riley-Smith and Park Avenue Liquor Shop Vice President, Jonathan Goldstein. In 2005, Riley-Smith and Goldstein met with Highland Park distillery representatives to nose and taste a selection of unique Highland Park casks in order to hand-select one that would be bottled exclusively for Whisky Live New York, before making it available exclusively at Park Avenue Liquor Shop. Together, they chose Highland Park Single Cask No. 443, which was originally distilled in 1982.

Highland Park, lauded for its highly acclaimed 12, 15, 18, 25 and 30 years old range of single malt whiskies, offers a selection of exclusive Single Casks, bottled from recently discovered casks that survived the tests of Orkney's uncompromising environment and showed to have exceptional character and maturity. Using its traditional floor-malting method to malt its own barley, plus peat cut from the Orkney's moorland to kiln dry the “green” malt, Highland Park ages its distinctive malt whisky in individual casks, which provide the liquid with flavors that are specific to each cask.

"We at Park Avenue Liquor Shop are always on the lookout for unusual casks of single malt whisky, so the idea of partnering with Whisky Magazine to select a special Highland Park single cask was very exciting to us," says Jonathan Goldstein. "This Highland Park bottling was chosen because it perfectly reflects Whisky Magazine's aim of celebrating fine whisky and presenting it to our audience of whisky enthusiasts," says Damian Riley-Smith.

Tasting notes for Highland Park Single Cask No. 443: The color is rich amber. The nose is complex with their trademark honey sweetness and then hints of beeswax and polished wood, sherried wine and faded spicy incense smoke. The palate is packed with chewy toffee and honey up front, then dark chocolate orange, and finally smoke, nuts and wood. The finish is long and elegant with the woodiness reflecting the whisky's age Alc./Vol.: 57.9% With only 470 bottles produced, Highland Park Single Cask No. 443 retails for $200 for a 750ml bottle.

Highland Park was established in 1798 on Orkney and is the most northerly Scotch whisky distillery in the world. With windswept moors, craggy outcrops and ancient religious sites, Orkney is a land full of mystery and rich in anecdote. This, combined with the wind, rain, crushing waves and freezing hail of the Orkney environment provide the perfect setting for the home of one of the world's best malt whiskies.

The Highland Park range of single malt whiskies in the U.S. includes: 12 Years Old, 15 Years Old, 18 Years Old, 25 Years Old, 30 Years Old and Single Cask. For more information, please visit www.highlandpark.co.uk.

Darryl Beeson travels the world looking for great wine and spirit finds. Says writer Roy Blount, Jr., “Wine is tough, but I know Darryl can do it.” Not to mention Scotch. Beeson has re-defined the meaning of a "wee dram."
