Panels Picks World’s Top 50 Restaurants
It isn’t news that France is home to many great restaurants. A dozen of that country’s dining establishments were included in a list of the world’s 50 best restaurants, as defined by a panel of experts assembled by the Italian bottled water company, S. Pellegrino. The list was announced in London on April 23.

Perhaps mildly surprising is the representation of the U.K., which placed eight restaurants on the list, the United States (seven) and Spain (six). Italy also had six restaurants nominated for the honor.
Chef Joan Roca (at right) came out front to bid good night to a group of departing American writers not long after his Girona (Spain) restaurant El Celler de Can Roca garnered its second Michelin star. The Pellegrino judges found his restaurant the 11th best in the world.

El Bulli, the Catalonian (Spain) restaurant of the very innovative Ferran Adria, was chosen the best in the world. Judges anointed The Fat Duck, a Berkshire (U.K.) establishment headed by Heston Blumenthal, another chef whose cuisine sounds, at the least, creative, if not bizarre, was in second place. The Parisian Pierre Gagnaire, named after its proprietor, placed third. In fourth spot was America’s highest ranking restaurant, the French Laundry in Yountville (Napa Valley of California). The evening held two triumphs for chef/owner Thomas Keller. In addition to the accolade for French Laundry, his New York restaurant, Per Se, was chosen number nine.

Additional to the list of the favored fifty, were the Lifetime Achievement Award (Alice Waters of Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California), Breakthrough Award (Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Restaurant in London) and the Readers’ Choice Award (Chef Shane Osborn’s Pied a Terre in London).
